About the Show
People living with challenging conditions are often considered 'undateable' - this series meets a few and follows their attempts to find love
Series 1 Summary
Looking for love can be tricky, but some find it harder than others. Add disability to the equation and it can sometimes seem almost impossible. This uplifting three-part series follows the journeys of several extraordinary singletons as they enter the dating circuit in pursuit of love.
From a stand-up comedian with Tourettes and a trapeze artist with brittle bones, to a media student with Down's Syndrome, an amateur poet with a learning disability, and a skateboarder with a facial disfigurement, the series follows them as they enter the world of blind dates, matchmakers and speed dating.
With the help of Searchmate, one of the UK's leading personal introductions agencies, and Stars in the Sky, a specialist dating agency for people with learning difficulties, The Undateables explores the realities of looking for love in an image-obsessed world, where too many people make snap judgements based on first impressions - and even consider some to be 'undateable'.
Episode 1 - The Undateables
The first episode features Richard, an amateur radio enthusiast, who has Asperger's. Richard will only date a woman who lives within a five-mile radius, and won't eat on a date.
Meanwhile, 23-year old Luke is a stand-up comedian who has Tourette's. He's got an active social life and a good group of friends, but in a world where first impressions are everything, he's petrified of approaching a girl for fear of calling her a slag - or worse.
How will Luke cope when he meets Lucy, a part-time receptionist, who's never known anyone with Tourette's before?
Trainee teacher Penny, 23, has a genetic disorder that means her bones are extremely brittle. She's never been on a date before, and is worried about getting left behind.
Penny is three feet three inches tall. Her ideal man is a 6 foot tall policeman. Will Max - who is 5ft 11ins - measure up?
Episode 2 - The Undateables
In this episode, Justin, who has tumours on his body and face, and has never been out with a girl before, goes on a first date with Tracey.
Justin is from the Midlands and has neurofibromatosis 1 - a rare condition in which tumours grow on nerve tissue on the body and face. Justin's had 100 operations, but in the meantime, has missed out on love, even though he loves being around women.
Shaine is from Bournemouth. The 31 year old is a prolific amateur poet with a learning disability. He can pen a lady a poem off the top of his head - but finds it hard to pluck up the courage to ask women out. Shaine has been in relationships before but hasn't been on a date for three years. He's signed up for a speed-dating night for people with additional needs.
Carolyne is a striking, bubbly 29-year-old from Greater Manchester who is sick of kissing frogs. She went to sleep one night five years ago and woke up the following morning paralysed from the chest down after a weak blood vessel burst in her spinal cord. A year later, her decade-long relationship with her childhood sweetheart broke down. In this episode she meets a young man called Wayne.
Episode 3 - The Undateables
A skater and avid Chelsea fan, 24-year-old Hadyn has Crouzon Syndrome. He has undergone 40 facial operations and is partially deaf. His twin brother and a dating agency hope to help Haydn to get over his lack of confidence with girls and find a girlfriend.
Actor and media student Sam from Kent has Down's Syndrome. The 27-year-old has appeared in The Inbetweeners and EastEnders and has a supportive family life, but feels there is something missing - a girl.
Kali, a 20-year-old singer from south London, has William's Syndrome - a rare genetic disorder that can lead to problems with development. Sociable and chatty, Kali is looking for a new boyfriend. She begins her search at a party where she hits the dance floor with a young man called Jimmy.
Episode 4 - The Undateables - Revisit
This episode revisits Richard, an amateur radio enthusiast with Asperger's, and comedian Luke, who has Tourette's.
There's also 32-year-old Shaine from Bournemouth, a prolific amateur poet with a learning disability who's written over 3000 love poems, some for complete strangers.
Sam, from Kent, is a media student and actor with Down's syndrome who's appeared in The Inbetweeners and EastEnders.
Last year, having never been on a date before, Sam fell in love with 28-year-old Jolene and, seven months on, the romance is still going strong.
