A checklist for clinics.

1. The patient sees the surgeon who will be conducting the surgery for their first consultation. Reasons for surgery must be analysed in an unbiased manner and medical history must be checked.
2. The surgeon’s qualifications must be explained and CV presented should they be asked.
3. The patient must be warned comprehensively of all the risks associated with the procedure they’re intending to have.
4. A chaperone should be offered during consultation.
5. After the consultation the surgeon will contact the patient’s GP if the patient agrees.
6. Aftercare procedure must be explained in detail, including who will be attending to their aftercare. (Ideally the surgeon in person, but, if not, explain in detail how the patient will be treated should a problem arise.)
7. A cooling-off period should be compulsory except in exceptional circumstances.
8. Special offers should not be used to pressure or encourage a patient to sign up for surgery during a specific time period.
