I'd been interested in Tom's story long before I was approached to write the script, having attended the memorial service for Tom at Westminster Cathedral after reading a public announcement in a newspaper. About a year later I received a call from my agent to say that Charles (executive producer) wanted to meet.

The Israel-Palestine conflict is very hard to get people to engage with on television, because newspapers and magazines have covered the issues for so long, so what we were looking for was hard factual stories that had dramatic potential. We wanted a human story which would make an audience imagine themselves in that hellish situation and that's why we ended up doing this particular story.
