About the Show
A heart-warming comedy series centred on the fortunes of Martin Hurdle, an everyday maintenance man with an uncanny ability to mimic voices
Series 2 Summary
The bittersweet comedy about Martin Hurdle, played by Terry Mynott, a talented impressionist who is stuck in a rut, returns for a second six-part series
Leaving his maintenance job for his big break on TV didn't quite go to plan, and Martin finds work increasingly hard to find. His son and agent Steven, unable to cope after the death of his mother, decides to go travelling. So Martin finds new agent Neil in his newsagents... The first gig is set to raise his impressionist profile, busking at a shopping centre.
Jean sets Martin up on a blind date with Harriet, her assertive body-language expert friend from Zumba. Meanwhile, Neil is convinced his elevated oestrogen level is the reason Jean dumped him...
Martin lands himself a new job in site maintenance, but Harriet has grander ideas for his career and sets up a meeting with an agent to the stars. Meanwhile, Neil's paranoia leads him to seek out a psychoanalyst, while Jean and Harriet come near to blows over the preparation of Martin's surprise birthday party.
Keen to create a family for Steven, Martin proposes to Harriet with his newly-discovered ring. But when she informs him he'll have to convert to Judaism and get circumcised, he has some serious thinking to do. And Martin has his first stand-up performance, but has to fall back on his impressions to get laughs. Guest star John Thomson.
Martin's impression-based stand-up gets bad reviews. With the wedding drawing near, Harriet's turned into Bridezilla, but when Martin meets Harriet's brother at his stag weekend, doubts arise as to Harriet's real motives, and secrets are revealed about her romantic past. With Martin's friends and family suspicious of the marriage, will he go through with it?
The series finale is a big emotional roller coaster of a day when Harriet and Martin are due to tie the knot. Only, with Martin having backed out of the circumcision required by Harriet's family, it now falls on him to fund the wedding. With trouble brewing in paradise, Jean finds it hard to conceal her feelings toward Martin.
