Profile: Mr Timperley (Kevin McNally)

Mr Timperley (Kevin McNally)

Mr Timperley (46) is the two-faced Apprentice House warden. One smiling face for the mill owners and another harsher face reserved for the apprentices themselves. He loves his wife and he loves his near total control of the Apprentice House. Nothing gives him more satisfaction than asserting his power over vulnerable children and receiving gratitude and deference in return.

The real Mr & Mrs Timperley: Appointed in 1835 as superintendents of the Apprentice House to succeed Mr and Mrs Shawcross, who stayed there for 25 years until the death of George Shawcross. The Timperleys’ tenure saw a decline in the management of the apprentices, with several cases of disorderly behaviour. Mrs Timperley died ‘of an apoplexy’ in 1836 while Esther Price was confined in the house.

Kevin McNally: A celebrated actor who has been working in film and TV for over 40 years. His first professional job, at the age of 16, was at the Birmingham Rep. In 1973 he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where, in 1975, he won the Best Actor Bancroft Gold Medal. He has starred in Downton Abbey, in which his wife Phyllis Logan plays the housekeeper, Mrs Hughes. He is best known for his role as Gibbs in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
