The Leader, His Driver and the Driver's Wife

The Leader, His Driver and the Driver's Wife

Eugene Terre'Blanche

This critically acclaimed film records a dark and uncertain period in South Africa's history. It chronicles the collapse of the white supremacist AWB party (Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging) in apartheid South Africa through a portrait of its leader, Eugene Terre'Blanche, his driver JP and JP's wife, Anita.

The AWB - a paramilitary Neo-Nazi movement - tried to start a bloody civil war by using extreme violence to destabilise South Africa. Broomfield trails Terreblanche on a tour of the country as he attends rallies, whipping up white hostility to the policies of Nelson Mandela's ANC and FW de Klerk's government.

As well as portraying the violent rhetoric of the Leader and the blindness of his followers, Broomfield also captures the absurd. Dressed like an overgrown boy scout, the buffoonish Leader is an object of ridicule as he falls off his horse and frequently flies into heated rages with Broomfield, who he brands a Turk.
