HIV/AIDS has killed more than 20 million people in Africa, but it is a preventable and treatable disease. Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, which block HIV's assault on the body's immune system, can transform the lives of people from near death to health in as little as three months.
Thanks to the work of organisations such as The Global Fund and (RED), the cost of treatment with ARV drugs is now as low as 40p a day.
The Global Fund
The Global Fund is an international financing institution that invests money in order to save lives. To date it has committed 19.3 billion US dollars in 144 countries to support large-scale prevention, treatment and care programmes.
(RED) raises awareness and funds to help the Global Funds fight AIDS in Africa. When consumers buy a (RED) product, part of the profit from that product is used to buy and distribute ARV medicine for those dying of AIDS in Africa. Since launch, (RED) partnerships with American Express (U.K. only), Apple, Bugaboo, Converse, Dell, Gap, Emporio Armani, Flowers (UK only), Hallmark, Starbucks, Nike, Penguin and (RED) events have generated more than US$ 150 million for the Global Fund.
