A bullish blue collar guy, Stan Larsen (Brent Sexton) grew up in a rough neighborhood, and as a young man provided muscle for mobster Janek Kovarsky. After becoming a father, Stan transformed his life from boozer and brawler to family man and business owner. Though he owns SA Larsen Moving And Storage, Stan still does his share of the grunt work and is partnered with his friend, Belko Royce. Happily married to Mitch for 17 years, he is the proud father of Rosie, Denny and Tom.
-
Mitch Larsen (Michelle Forbes) is Stan's wife, a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who has found peace as a housewife and mother. A bit rough around the edges, Mitch doesn't put up with any nonsense. She is a force of nature who wants a better life for her children, Rosie, Denny and Tom. Mitch has raised her oldest child, Rosie, to be considerably more modest and accomplished than the rest of the girls at her school.

Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) works for the Seattle Police Department. A smart, competent cop, she often sees what other cops don't. Sarah is a silent watcher, taking everything in without ever revealing her hand. Outside of work, she's a distance runner and a single mum to whom motherhood doesn't come naturally. Determined to have a normal life separate from the horrors of her job, Sarah is ready to walk away, marry her fiance and move her child and her life to California.
-
A former narcotics detective who feels right at home in the grit and ugliness of undercover work, Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) has just been promoted to Homicide, where he's a fish out of water. His boss, Lieutenant Oakes, chides him for his shabby attire and considers him incapable of the delicate maneuvering the Rosie Larsen case requires, but despite his inexperience the detective's dogged style complements Sarah's measured approach.
-
Darren Richmond (Billy Campbell), the president of the Seattle City Council, is running for Mayor. Richmond is in a relationship with Gwen Eaton, his campaign advisor - a relationship he is keeping under wraps until the election is over - but still longs for his wife, who passed away years ago. He has political potential on a national scale, a man of principle and unshakeable beliefs amid a political world swimming with sharks.
-
Darren Richmond's campaign adviser and lover, Gwen Eaton (Kristin Lehman) is the smart, sophisticated, and ambitious daughter of a senator. One of Richmond's most intimate political associates, her professional relationship with him becomes strained after she learns that he had her emails searched as part of his effort to determine who'd been leaking campaign secrets.
-
Jamie Wright (Eric Ladin) is the brilliant campaign manager for Darren Richmond. A policy shark and loyal sidekick, Jamie is focused on the political battle 24/7 and chafes against Richmond's indiscreet relationship with Gwen Eaton. He's a master chess player and strategist, and a valuable - if deeply opinionated - asset to the Richmond campaign.
-
Rick Felder (Callum Keith Rennie) is Sarah Linden's fiance. Deeply in love with Sarah, Rick is anxious to create a new life with her and her son Jack in California. On the morning of what's supposed to be her last day on force, Rick flies to California to set up their new home and continue planning their wedding, but after discovering Rosie's body, Sarah doesn't join him that evening as planned. Rick takes the delay in stride, but becomes increasingly uneasy as Sarah continues to remain in Seattle.
-
Belko Royce (Brendan Sexton) grew up in the same neighborhood as Stan, a 'lost boy' type who gravitated to Stans natural leadership and, eventually, his loving family. Belko is fiercely loyal to the Larsens and spends most of his time helping Stan with the moving company and being an unofficial uncle to the Larsen kids.
-
Lesley Adams (Tom Butler) is Seattle's incumbent mayor and currently locked in a tight race with Seattle city councilman Darren Richmond to retain his post. A consummate operator who may have a mole on Richmond's campaign staff, Adams rattles his rival by consistently anticipating his political moves. The old-school politician privately mocks voters as goldfish with five-second memories.
-
Sterling Fitch (Kacey Rohl) is Rosie Larsen's best friend. The two hang out at the Halloween dance and are seen together in video footage now in police custody. At school before Rosie's body is discovered, Sterling, her nose mysteriously bleeding, lies to Principal Meyers and her teacher, Bennet Ahmed, about Rosie spending the weekend at her house.
-
Jasper Ames (Richard Harmon) is Rosie Larsen's ex-boyfriend. Privileged and smug, he parties at his jet-setting parents' Mercer Island weekend home when they're out of town. Jasper's friend Kris hints to Sterling that Jasper and Rosie hooked up after the Halloween dance.
-
Kris Echols (Gharrett Patrick Paon) is Jasper's skateboarding friend. After Rosie's disappearance is announced at school, Sterling tracks down Kris at his hangout, where he hints that Rosie hooked up with Jasper after the Halloween dance.
-
Michael Ames (Barclay Hope) is Jasper's wealthy, jet-setting father and the owner of a considerable amount of property on the Mercer Island waterfront.
-
Bennet Ahmed (Brandon Jay McLaren) is teacher at Fort Washington High School. Twenty-eight years old with a retro-hip look, Bennet describes Rosie to Mitch as the kind of student that made him get into teaching - 'so smart and eager to learn'. But the nature of Bennet's connection to Rosie soon becomes unclear.
-
Principal Meyers (Kerry Sandomirsky) runs Seattle's Fort Washington High School. Perfectly coiffed and partial to stiletto heels, she cuts an assured presence with staff, but clearly defers to powerbrokers such as Mayor Adams and Michael Ames. The death of Rosie Larsen (following a school event) and the revelation of The Cage (Fort Washington's basement party palace) may threaten her career.
-
Terry (Jamie Anne Allman) is Mitch's younger, party-girl sister, who spends her nights hanging out in bars and clubs. While the Larsens mourn Rosies death, Terry picks up the slack around the house, including looking after her two young nephews. Even though she means well, she often says all the wrong things. Terry is close to her sister and knows a hidden side to Mitch - she once wanted a bigger and better life than the one she has now.
-
Ruth Yitanes (Lee Garlington) is a former union organiser who turned politico, and her endorsement is crucial to Darren Richmond's mayoral campaign. Brash and tough talking, she quickly takes command of any room she walks into.
-
Lyndon Johnson Rosales (VJ Delos Reyes) is the janitor at Fort Washington High School. He successfully concealed from the school administration his prior convictions for indecent exposure (in front of teenage girls) and inapropriate dealings with children.
-
Regi Darnell is Sarah Linden's social worker, the woman who guided the young Sarah during her years in foster care and who witnessed first-hand how Sarah's obsession with an earlier case nearly lost her custody of her young son, Jack.
