The Second World War was the defining event of the twentieth century.
A generation after the war's end, what role does its legacy continue to play in all our lives? What can it tell us about the nature of good and evil, of suffering and redemption, and of courage and cruelty?
On the eve of the 60th anniversary of D-day, Channel 4 debates the enduring legacy of World War Two and its continuing relevance today. Chaired by journalist Jonathan Freedland, the debate is held in conjunction with the Guardian Hay Festival and features authors Antony Beevor, Niall Ferguson, Joanne Bourke and Jorg Friedrich, whose controversial novel The Fire: Germany Under Bombardment 1940-45 disputes that there was any justice in the killing of the hundreds of thousands of women and children who died in those raids.
