  Together with her husband Jon Halliday, Chang demolishes what she says are myths about Mao. While her earlier book was a personal look at 20th-century China through the eyes of her mother, her grandmother and her, the new book is a careful study that took 10 years to complete.

• The Hay Festival 2005: Three Authors in Search of the Novel

  Three of Britain's foremost novelists discuss the direction of the novel. One of the three is Julian Barnes, whose novel Arthur and George was published the summer that this debate took place. Another is Kazuo Ishiguro, who wrote The Remains of the Day and more recently Never Let Me Go, while the third is Jonathan Coe, author of The Rotters' Club and What a Carve Up!
