The Big Decision

Tuesday 27 September 2011

From caring for the world around them, to helping people learn the skills they need to make the most of their lives to promoting science and technology – for the first time, the general public has been asked to decide the themes that best represent their priorities for lottery funding in the current climate.

The Millennium Now programme aims to fund projects reflecting the five Millennium themes listed below.

1. Encouraging environmental sustainability

We think that it's important to find ways to help maintain the environment around us for future generations. We could help to do this by encouraging green activities like recycling and promoting renewable energy. It may also mean regenerating old buildings for new uses or restoring the natural environment for us all to enjoy. What do you think we should fund to help sustain our environment?

2. Investing in education

Learning doesn't stop when you leave school or university; opportunities for learning are important throughout life. From basic literacy, money management or computer skills to apprenticeships, vocational training or learning from other people, there are many ways learning can help us. What do you think we should fund and why?

3. Places

The UK is made up of urban, rural and coastal areas that all have different opportunities and issues for the people who live there or visit – where do you think would benefit from investment and why? How could these places be better?

4. Connecting communities

We are all part of different communities, from the area we live in to the friends we have or the groups we're part of. Whether it's celebrating local or national events, sharing stories across different cultures or generations or working together to improve services or facilities, how can we help people get involved to make their communities stronger?

5. Promoting science, technology and health

Science, technology and health affect our lives. Whether through learning about science in creative ways, taking advantage of new technology or finding out how to look after our health, what could we fund in these areas that could make a difference to you?
