Automatically taking a shine to Penny, Leonard strives for various ways to impress her. Ultimately he fails every time, turning into a bumbling fool. At least the thought's there though, eh?
Despite his perhaps over-arching aspirations for Penny, he can't really deny where his loyalties lie - in the kingdom of the geek. For goodness sake, he even uses no tears Darth Vader shampoo. Luke Skywalker is reserved for the conditioner...
