First Broadcast: Fri 6 August 2010

Every year over 18 million people pass through A&E departments in England: young and old, rich and poor; the A&E trolley doesn't discriminate.

Toby Paton's First Cut film, written and narrated by performance poet Luke Wright, offers an intimate window into these lives, from critically ill children to drunken teenagers to the ravages of old age.

Each case provides a glimpse of the fear that grips patients and their loved ones in their most vulnerable moments, and the sadness that comes with the illness of a loved one, but also the strength of the bonds that bring people together in moments of adversity.

This sensitive documentary also features contributions from hospital staff, including the story of Karl who, after becoming ill, gave up his career as an antiques dealer to give something back to the hospital by becoming a porter of The Bed.
