Having tracked down three of those American citizens who tried to exploit their country's darkest hour for their own ends - from making fake insurance claims to false death claims and fabricating departed loved ones - 9/11 Liars tells the stories of the people who lied in the wake of a national catastrophe. As the majority of Americans struggled to come to terms with the enormity of what had happened, a tiny handful saw an opportunity in the chaos and confusion following the attacks. In the American public's eye these fraudsters had committed arguably the most heinous sin of all: they had violated the sanctity of 9/11. Through the stories of the 9/11 Liars this film explores how a nation came to realise they could no longer trust one another the way they used to. American innocence had been shattered forever.
