Scrimping Tips: Week 2

The quest to cut costs continues with more Superscrimping tips.

Make your beauty products go further

What you'll need

Your everyday beauty products e.g. Moisturiser, serums and cleansers

5p (serum)

10p (cleansers)

20p (moisturisers)

How to do it

To make sure you don't use too much product, use the coins as a guide for the amount to be used. Using the information below, place the coin on your palm and with the correlating product squeeze it out onto your hand to resemble the size of the coin.

Teacup candle

What you'll need

Cheap teacup and saucer, old wax candles, sticky tape, medium saucepan, small metal jug or similar

How to do it

Step 1: Simmer some water in the medium saucepan and place the smaller jug into the water (i.e. a bain marie)

Step 2: Put the candles into the smaller pan and melt

Step 3: Dip the tip of some wick (from your old candle) into the melted wax

Step 4: Stick the wick into the base of the cup in the centre, place a piece of tape over the centre of the cup (edge to edge) and secure the wick to the tape to ensure it stays in the middle

Step 5: Taking extra care, remove the melted wax from the saucepan and pour into the teacup. Warning: wear an oven glove for this

Step 6: Allow to cool down and set!

Prevent burst pipes over the winter

Step 1: Switch your heating onto constant

Step 2: Turn up all the radiator valves around the house

Step 3: Lastly, and the key to keeping your heating bills down, you need to switch your thermostat to a low setting, between the frost sign and 10 C is ideal.

Homemade lip balm

What you'll need

16g of almond oil

4g of beeswax

Small jar or tin for storage

Flavouring

How to do it

Simply melt the oil and wax together and add a splash of flavouring. Decant into your favourite tin or jar and leave to cool

Warning: may not be suitable for people with allergies

Freezing your cash card

How to do it

To make sure you stick to budget and don't overspend. Draw the cash for your weekly budget then freeze your card/cards by sticking them in a dish with some water and popping the dish into the freezer. It will have to defrost before you can use it again!

Saving your golden syrup

How to do it

Put the jar into the microwave for a few seconds to heat up. This will make it runny so you can get the very last bit out.

Scrimper Tip: do not place a tin of syrup into the microwave

Cheap hand and nail scrub

What you'll need

Used half lemon, tsp of sugar

How to do it

Just tip the sugar into the hollow of the lemon and rub your finger tips in the solution. Once you're done, give your hands a good rinse and they'll be fresh and clean.

Scrimper Tip: rub a bit of olive oil into your hands to make them nice and soft

Warning: can irritate occasionally and should not be used on broken skin

Avoid a seized car door lock

What you'll need

Washing up liquid, safety pin

How to do it

Step 1: The night before some anticipated frost, take your safety pin and stick it into the keyhole of your car door

Step 2: Pour the liquid onto the pin and into the keyhole

Step 3: Wriggle the pin around for a bit and remove. This should prevent your locks from freezing over night

Cheap windscreen cleaner

What you'll need

Methylated spirits, kitchen roll or a clean rag

How to do it

Step 1: Squirt a bit of the spirit onto the rag Step 2: Using a circular motion (if you like) wipe the windscreen clean Step 3: Use a clean rag to dry and wipe off the excess liquid

Scrimper Tip: Use the spirit and rag to clean your wiper blades too!

Using loo roll inners for planting seeds

What you'll need

Loo roll inners, compost, root vegetable seeds, seedling tray

How to do it

Step 1: pop the roll into a tray

Step 2: fill the roll with your compost and top with the seeds then a bit more compost

Step 3: water regularly

Step 4: when the plant is big enough, transfer it, with the roll, into the ground

Scrimper Tip: This is a great way to plant root crops as they don't like their roots disturbed. Best to use early seeds and sow them in Late February to March in a warm environment.

Prepare a whole bag of potatoes

How to do it

Rather than letting excess potatoes rot away in your cupboard, you can prep the whole bag in one go. Simply peel and halve. Parboil them for 5 minutes, drain off, let them cool then put all of them in the freezer, ready for the next time you want some roast potatoes.

Releasing a shut radiator valve

Gripper or pliers

How to do it

Step 1: Unscrew the radiator valve head to remove it

Step 2: This will expose a small pin. using a gripper or pliers, gently wriggle the pin so it loosens

Step 3: Re-attach the valve head and your radiator should be back to normal

Left over beer as lawn feed

How to do it

Step 1: Pour the dregs of beer into a watering can or similar

Step 2: Mix it in with some water

Step 3: Sprinkle over your lawn

Make your lemon last longer

Lemon, metal skewer

How to do it

Step 1: Pierce the lemon at the top with your skewer

Step 2: Squeeze out what you need

Step 3: Wrap it in foil and put it in the fridge until you need it again
