Greatest Gadgets

Tuesday 15 November 2011

The winner of the competition is Alix Bee. Her choice of greatest gadget was the Dog Ball-thrower.

"The Dog Ball-thrower - cheap but genius. Saves me picking up sloppy tennis balls, losing a finger when the dog jumps up to steal the ball from my hand but, most importantly, saves me the embarrassment of throwing like a girl! Simple, effective, not really stylish but definitely functional."

Alix's entry was selected by a panel including the Executive Producer of 'Stephen Fry's 100 Greatest Gadgets' and the Channel 4 Multiplatform Commissioning Editor for the show. The judging panel liked the entry for its humour and persuasiveness. Alix's submission was a well written and witty entry, which focussed on an object that was simple yet fulfilled a specific need.

Runners-up included:

Oonagh Wood - Stephen, it has to be glasses. I was nineteen, and had been driving a car for two years, before I discovered that the world in fact did not look like a Van Gogh painting. Glasses mean such a lot to me. Love mine!

Greg Ineson - the greatest gadget is the camera. Why? Because it is the keeper of memory, the capture of emotion and the art of composition. without it our sympathy would not be drawn from images of tragic disasters.Or joy from times forgot. If you know of a better gadget send me a pic. For seeing is believing.

Jin England - I think the cats eye has to be up there as the greatest gadget. It's so simple, but think how much easier it has made driving along those dark lanes. There can't be many gadgets out there that benefit by being run over! In fact it's such a great design that I don't need to use the remaining chara.

Louis Wilson - It couldn't be anything but the swivel chair. Uses include, but are not limited to: Office jousting, spinning wildly, revealing yourself and your white cat to James Bond just before announcing your plans for world domination, weight lifting, complaining about and using as a tiny drop-tower ride.

Thanks to all the entrants who submitted a wonderful variety of gadgets, from the Zip to the Cat's Eye.
