Squirrel Wars: Red vs Grey

Squirrel Wars: Red vs Grey

Watch this episode now on 4oD Paul Parker

To licensed pest-control officer Paul, grey squirrels are recent immigrants. They came to Britain in the 1820s from America and their population has been multiplying ever since.

The main losers in the squirrel wars have been the British red squirrels, falling victim to a deadly squirrel plague whenever the greys move into their patch. It seems that Britain isn't big enough for the both of them.

The headquarters for Paul's mission are the offices of Lord Rupert Redesdale in the House of Lords, who runs the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership. This funds Paul's quest to rid Northumberland, home of the Redesdale estate, of the entire grey squirrel population.

But how will this one-man elimination team, armed with a rifle, a camouflage jacket and a few traps, fare in a county of 1.2 million acres? And what happens when Lord Redesdale's squirrel war fund starts to diminish, leaving Paul more alone than ever?

  1. The point isn't how they got here or what they are doing here and its nothing to do with been British. The point which that show didn't really seem to push is that they are killing a native species by spreading pox so its simply a choice of grey or red and personally I'd prefer native red. Otherwise its case of creating areas of zero greys for reds to inhabit. I agree fully with what they are doing.

  2. not fair to kill them, they didnt come over here, we brought them over here, like most things this isnt animals fault its humans fault, the grey squirrels are simply following their natural territorial instinct, its not our right to kill them, no more is it our right to kill a fox for eating chickens, its exactly the same animals arent trying to annoy people they have evolved in a way that ensures their own survival, this is a disgrace

  5. I remember from my school days in Surrey seeing red squirrels in the local woods, now there are none, only the American grey tree rats. I fully support Paul's actions and will contribute to his effort in any way I can. Keep up the good work!

  6. I thought Paul was doing a great job. I can't believe there is no campaign to support him and it did seem to end with the operation running out of money. What a shame.

  8. Hear, hear! Death to the grey squirrel, which is also responsible for debarking our trees.

  9. I wholeheartedly support the eradication of the grey squirrel population in Britain and had heard that a systematic move to remove this pest was in operation in Northumberland but am diappointed to see it being run on somewhat of a shoestring. Is there no group which has formally taken up this aim anywhere else in the country? From the way that the programme ended, one would assume that the grey squirrel population has been 'allowed' to increase in the months since the programme was made. Is there any news of the situation as it stands at present?
