Sisters in Law

Fighting to eradicate corruption from their country's patriarchal legal system, Sisters in Law follows the women endeavouring to make an impact in Cameroon's courtrooms.

Beatrice is a judge in the Court of First Instance in Kumbaand, where she is often confronted with cases highlighting the need for more female legal representation. One example is the case of Ladi, who accuses her husband of beating her. This is an important case for Beatrice as it is the first time a woman has dared take her husband to court for this offence.

Juliana is a Court Registrar. The film follows her as she struggles to become a judge in the local Customary Court. Her initial application is turned down but, with the help of Beatrice and State Prosecutor, Vera, Juliana hopes to fight her case. Many of the judges previously appointed to the Court, all men, have since died - and there's a desperate need for more. If Juliana is successful it will be the first time that a woman has been appointed to preside over such a traditional courtroom.

With a compassionate eye, Sisters in Law presents a rare, strong and positive view of African women - truly capturing an emerging spirit of courage, hope and the possibility of change.
