Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) has gone to help her father, John (Adam Trese), and her uncle, Peter (Eric Sheffer Stevens), to empty and renovate their old lakeside house in preparation to sell it.
Before she enters the large property, which has been boarded up to protect against vandals, everything seems normal, aside from an encounter with a woman who claims to have been a childhood friend, but whom Sarah cannot remember.
But once she's inside the gloomy, torch-lit building (the power was cut long ago), it's plain that things are far from normal. A violent act makes it clear that they're in danger, and they soon realise that someone, or something, does not want them to leave.
So begins a protracted, terrifying struggle for liberty and perhaps even life...
The film is a remake of the Uruguayan horror La Casa Muda, which was made in a single take. Silent House didn't quite manage that technical feat, but the editing is so minimal that it's a close-run thing.
