Widower Mike Swift is trying to bring up his teenage daughter Anne and his eight year-old son, Peter. Anne is still grieving the loss of her mother, while dealing with her own teenage angst about boys and sex, when Mike meets Deborah - a vibrant young woman who awakens his lost passion for Tango dancing.
Mike brings Deborah into their home. At first Anne is wary, but when she confides in Deborah about her boy trouble, at last she feels she has a girlfriend who understands. Then young Peter starts playing up. Is he just missing his real mother, or is there another reason for him to be reacting so badly?
Over the summer, as the relationships unravel, Anne begins to feel scared in her own house and soon makes the most horrific discovery.
