About the Show
Paul Abbott's critically acclaimed, offbeat drama about the rollercoaster lives and loves of the dysfunctional Gallagher clan
Series 1 Summary
Meet the Gallagher family as they experience life on the edge in a blur of sexual adventures, triumphs, love, scams and petty crime on a Manchester housing estate. And be thankful they're not your neighbours...
Having her handbag stolen proves to be a blessing in disguise for Fiona when handsome stranger Steve comes to her rescue.
Lip is shocked to discover Ian could be gay and decides his brother should pay a 'visit' to the ever-accommodating Karen Jackson. But the sudden arrival of her furious father ensures Ian's already slim chances of happiness with Karen take a severe blow.
Meanwhile, Steve buys Fiona a romantic gift, but for some reason she is less than impressed with her brand new washing machine.
Lip is even less impressed on discovering that Ian is dating a married man but a heart to heart between the brothers leads Lip to accept his brother's sexuality.
After a fight with Steve, Frank Gallagher disappears and fails to return to collect his Giro. The Gallaghers panic further when a body is discovered in a nearby river.
Frank, meanwhile, is waking up somewhere in France. After scaring the locals, he ends up in jail.
When news of this reaches the Chatsworth Estate, neighbours Kev and Veronica set out to bring Frank home.
When he returns to find Steve living in his house, another drunken night out leads Frank to move in with loopy neighbour Sheila, leaving his family to fend for themselves...
Mentioning wedding plans to discourage an amorous female customer, barman Kev is overheard by Frank who tells everyone in the pub.
After drunken celebrations, Kev proposes to girlfriend Veronica but the following morning admits he is already married.
When Veronica's mum hears of the wedding and tells Veronica her father had left her money to pay for it, they decide to fake the wedding and use the money to pay for their house.
Meanwhile Ian rejects classmate Mandy, who sets her brother on him and forces Ian to admit to Mandy's brother he is gay.
Veronica's crazy brother Marty escapes from jail and burns down the toilets at their wedding, leaving Kev and Veronica to pay the bill and unable to buy their house.
When a small child goes missing from a children's party on the Chatsworth estate, Frank turns the crowd into a lynch mob.
Frank and Karen hit the road for their driving lesson, but Karen adds some extra-curricular manoeuvres to the timetable. Meanwhile, Ian and Kash are caught in the act by Kash's wife Yvonne.
Frank stuns the family by turning up in the morning to get his post when it's not even Giro day. It soon transpires that he's hatching a plan to get his hands on maintenance from his ex-wife.
Frank is only worrying about himself as usual, and things are not looking good. The housing office is on to him, his debts are piling up and the bailiffs are still on the doorstep.
Forget a traditional Christmas and prepare for the outrageous Gallagher clan and the entire Chatsworth Estate to bring their own chaotic brand of Christmas cheer.
