With their ship trapped, Shackleton and his men are forced onto the ice, and it becomes clear that the only way out is to haul boats across the ice floes to the sea. Against all odds the men reach the water and endure a ninety-mile journey across the South Atlantic to Elephant Island.
After reaching this tiny inhospitable island, Shackleton then sets out in a lifeboat with only five of his crew to navigate the world's stormiest ocean and reach civilisation on South Georgia. The remaining men set up camp on Elephant Island, living under their upturned boats, their fate entirely in Shackleton's hands...
