SAS - The Real Story

Series 1 Episode 1
First Broadcast: Mon 15 September 2003

The story of the SAS's little-known exploits in Oman and their subsequent association with excellence in desert warfare.

The organisation's spectacular victory at the Jebel Akhbar established the soldiers' credentials as desert fighters par excellence and began their long association with battles over oil.

Oman in '58, Dhofar in '72 - and more recently Iraq and Afghanistan - were all desert and mountain environments in which the SAS has operated often hundreds of miles behind enemy lines.

Oman was also the site of one the great untold battles, where 400 rebels attacked a fort at Mirbat that was guarded by nine SAS men. Against all odds the SAS held out until they were relieved three hours later.

The men involved in that battle and other desert campaigns tell their stories.
