Having abandoned a troubled relationship in his native Belgium, single father Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts) travels south, along with his young son Sam (Armand Verdure), to Antibes on the Côte d'Azur. There, his sister Anna (Corinne Masiero) takes him in and finds the one-time prizefighter a job as a bouncer.
While working at the nightclub, Ali meets Stéphanie (Marion Cotillard), who trains killer whales at the local version of Sea World.
Nothing much happens between the two of them at first. But, later, Stéphanie suffers a terrible accident at the marine park and is left unable to work. Deeply depressed, she finds Ali's number and calls him...
The film, adapted from short stories by Craig Davidson, garnered widespread critical appreciation for its avoidance of melodrama and the quality of the actors' performances; it also did well at awards ceremonies and festivals around the world, including Bafta nominations, a Palme d'Or nomination and the Best Film award at the 2012 London Film Festival.
