Watch Gill Meller, Head Chef at River Cottage HQ show you how to boil an egg
As Gill explains, the cooking time varies depending on the size and temperature of the egg. It's not a good idea to use eggs straight out of the fridge as there's an increased chance they will crack when put in hot water. Instead keep your eggs at room temperature or heat them up in your hands until they stop feeling cold.
General guidelines for cooking medium-sized eggs
- Soft boiled – for an egg with a runny yolk and wobbly white only boil your egg for three minutes.
- Hard boiled – if you’re after a solid yolk and solid white then boil your egg for eight to ten minutes.
If you're using large eggs then add a minute to the above timings.
