Revelations

How Do You Know God Exists?

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams

Leading figures in the five principal faiths in Britain discuss their beliefs and answer questions about their basic faith and their own spiritual journeys.

The key figures interviewed are Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols, Muslim theologian Tariq Ramadan, Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and Sadhu Paramtattvadas.

As well as addressing the 'big questions', including their concepts of God, heaven and hell, they speak frankly about their struggles and frequent moments of doubt, about the divisions within their ranks and crimes that have been committed in the name of religion.

  1. I know that God exists because: 1. He created the earth exactly so that us people could live on/in it. 2. Almost all of his prophesies have been fulfilled. EX 1.No one knows when God/Jesus will come. TRUE! EX 2. Jerusalem will be the mostimportant religious site. ALMOST! IT'S VERY IMPORTANT AT THE TIME! Therefore, in my eyes, God/Jesus exists, and will save me, and already has!!!

  4. It seems as though a long time ago religion started a monopoly on all things important to what could be considered the 'soul'. Love, bereavement, charity compassion and much else are said to be the property of what is religious. This is unfair. It appears that people can say they are Christian or any other religion and by default, be seen as good people. However, I find the greatest hypocrisy most often commited is by people of supposed faith. People of religion make it seem that to be atheist and without God may as well make you a living monster devoid of emotion and compassion. It is this which upsets me. I'm an atheist and I consider myself a charitable, friendly, balanced and good natured person and to me that is being human. Not divine.

  5. First to quote below "Islam and Science goes well together as there are no contradiction" one word --*evolution* the biggest contradiction with religion and science- natural selection needs no divine creator. We are end products of nearly 4 billions years of natural selection of molecules creating complex organisms. Trillions of organisms and species have died as a result from competition and natural selection to produce us in our current forms. No divine intelligent god would be so wasteful!! Second its always "nice" to see "pandits" such as Swami Pramtattvadas repeat ad verbatim the meme of reincarnation, nirvana and karma. He fails to explain how these laws work other than consequence from %u201Cgood%u201D and %u201Cbad%u201D actions and how supposedly pure and sin free nuns/ monks can still get cancer, suffer from starvation, old age, mental distress, disease, suffering and so on even though they are supposedly of better karmic pedigree than others? The karmic and caste system is method to suppress fellow human beings using an unproved model for suffering-India is now finally realizing this by playing down caste and karmic systems in its modern economic models. Also if god is (in) everything is he also in every molecule, virus, bacteria plague, also in us? Therefore swine flu is god invading god? And tamiflu is god stopping god invading god? Is god in the neuron of the brain of the man who abused his own child? Or in the bullet that resulted in genocide of millions? I'm glad I am Hindu no more even if I spend an eternity in multiple life forms I shall never be a god worshiping Hindu. There are other paths to enlightenment nirvana is freedom from the bonds of religion! The recent issue of "Nature" http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v460/n7256/full/nature08237.html reports the first -almost solved structure of the RNA HIV genome. A major breakthrough in the treatment of the disease, something with the potential to end physical suffering for millions. He (the "pandit") has spent most of his adult life getting up and down in front of ceramic deity in search of selfish *personal* karmic salvation whilst others spend their lives in labs, classrooms, universities, charities. Who therefore benefits humanity most? I would rather spend every last minute and breath researching science, maths, and *doing* rather than praying and meditating and waiting for a hypothesised afterlife or unseen deity. We don't know the complete nature of the universe but as long as there is blind faith in god we shall remain divided from another until we are no more.

  6. @DAVID on 16/08/2009 at 20:18 I will give you the benefit of the doubt (and that of this countries voters) and presume that you mean that once politicians in this country show their true colours and, if questioned, they reveal that that their understanding of morality is that they think that they will be punished in an non existent afterlife for their misdemeanours rather than basing their morality on what is good for humanity in the here and now, that they will loose votes. Sadly, I doubt that sufficient voters would see it this way myself.

  7. @ BADAR NASIR on 16/08/2009 at 20:27 Why do you not make a programme and ask all those people who do believe the existence of gods to answer the following question; Can you provide evidence that there are any gods? Let me give you their answer, "We cannot, even though we believe in their existence, there is no evidence that there are any gods but we have chosen to believe and have faith that there are gods" BTW I am aware that your particular faith uses this particular question "proof that there is no god" as a matter of doctrine, however, it is a logical fallacy to assert that one has to prove a negative - the onus is on the believer to provide the evidence, not the disbeliever. And as for the problem of the events of 11/9/2001, would this act have even been possible without the influence of the perpetrators religious beliefs, never mind that you appear to invoke the no true Scotsman fallacy to assert that it was not the fault of [your version of] Islam?

  8. A retired Anglican cleric, I just caught the last few minutes of this programme. What I saw inspired me. I know Rowan Williams well, and was not surprised at what he said. What did surprise - and encourage me - was what your other contributors said. I think you are right. You have tapped into the best of the human spirit. In this programme, you have touched the hem of heaven. You have inspired me in my teaching ministry for the Salisbury diocese and in my prison and homeless young persons' ministries. Thank you. Be encouraged.

  9. I must say as a Muslim and a woman I am very disappointed by the choice of represent of the Muslim community in the show as he clearly is not among the Muslim scholar and they way the portray Muslim and the holy Quran was unfair but never the less the question, ‘’How Do You Know God Exists?’’ crystal clear answer, READ the Quran if not for the spiritual guide then for understanding. Islam and Science goes well together as there are no contradiction, Woman have right that is why we don’t even take our husband second name after getting married, we have the right to heritage, we always had the right to do business to own properties, when Married women, until late in the nineteenth century, did not have 'the right to own property and to conclude valid contracts', losing this right on marriage, we have all right as men do so don’t listen to the misinformation.

  11. Hello I would like to clarify few things as one of the main question that was asked in this program was to define God. To answer this question I would like to present the following verses from the Holy Quran Name of Surah: Al-Ikhlas In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful Say: He is Allah the One and Only; (1) Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; (2) He begetteth , not nor is He begotten; (3) And there is none like unto Him. (4) The above definition gives us the clear criteria and definition of God which can only be fulfilled by God himself. I would like to ask couple of questions from the programme maker 1: Why do you show 9/11 and associate this to Islam, I can assure you and challenge you that you will not be able to find even one verse from Nobel Quran that preaches killings of human beings. If you do want to present anything to me then make sure you do not take that verse out of context. 2: Why do you not make a programme and ask all those people who do not believe the existence of God to answer the following question Can you prove that there is no God? Let me give you their answer, "We cannot even though there is more evidence that there is God but we have chosen to believe that there is no God". Now let me tell you that this answer in the light of %u201CAllah, the Eternal, Absolute%u201D. Allah (SWT) provides for all the universe and humanity and if human does not believe about the existence of Allah (SWT), then this human belief does not affect Allah (SWT). Please visit http://www.irf.net/ for further research about Islam. Thanks

  12. very challenging documentary well put together, making aware the hurt of followers because of doctrine and identify the value of belief and faith. Would be interested with the general election approaching to see and hear where politicians stand with their individuals beliefs - votes could be one or lost with their answers especially now that their true morals have been brought into question. Would be good to use in school discussions. thanks

  13. Very disappointing in that it bore no relation to the title "How Do You Know God Exists?". None of the interviewees tackled the question because the question was never put to them. However, it was very satisfying in the aspect that it compared the various religions profiled and damned them in the inquest of their views, both between the various religions and in the disparity of those that were interviewed with the adherents of their respective religions. I must admit that the programme provoked me to shout responses to the inane answers of the interviewees. It's about time that we should rid ourselves of the religious hypocrisy and bigotry shown in this programme.
