Private Lives of the Pharaohs

Series 1 Episode 1
First Broadcast:

The first mystery to be examined is why the family of the boy king Tutankhamun, the famous 18th Dynasty, came to an abrupt end one and a half thousand years ago.

The 18th Dynasty was probably the greatest of the Egyptian royal families, ruling for about 200 years in the middle of the second millennium BC. But Tutankhamun was the last of the line.

When Howard Carter found the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, he also found the remains of two foetuses buried in the pharaoh's tomb. In a bid to uncover the truth, two American scientists from Brigham University in Utah, microbiologist Dr. Scott Woodward and archaeologist Dr. Wilfred Griggs, have been allowed for the first time to take DNA samples from the Royal mummies, and from the two foetuses. Their findings enable the family's passions and tragedies to re-emerge from the sand.
