Expert Profiles

How did you become a relationship expert?

Out of necessity! I watched my parents' marriage end in divorce and relationship heartbreak was all around me. I went to America and studied relationship psychology. I came back to London, wrote some books and counselled people privately.

What is your relationship status?

Blissfully married! In fact, it's been 6 years of intensive learning!

If we went rummaging through your bedroom, what clues to your character would we find? Not much! My wife is an interior designer so we have a minimal look.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

I believe in instant attraction but not love. Love grows out of your commitment to someone.

Ben Renshaw is the author of The Secrets of Relationships and is an inspirational speaker, seminar leader, coach and broadcaster. A former violinist at The Yehudi Menuhin School, Ben now plays a different tune, coaching people to fulfil their potential.

What's the best advice you can give someone trying to find a life partner?

Relax! Focus on feeling good about yourself. We are most attractive when we're being true to ourselves.

Has taking part in Perfect Match taught you anything new about relationships?

It showed me how relationships are so unpredictable. You never know what's going to happen.

What are the most important things a couple need to have in common to be compatible?

Sexual vibe! Physical attraction is very important, but so is sharing similar values and interests.

Why do relationships go wrong?

Where do you want me to start? The biggest reason is the breakdown of communication. Once a couple stop communicating trust disappears, respect goes and your partner becomes the enemy.
