Other People's Breast Milk

Other People's Breast Milk

Watch this episode now on 4oD Kate Garraway

Kate Garraway - herself the mother of a two-year-old daughter - investigates the pros and cons of cross-feeding, breast-milk donation and wet-nursing by meeting some of the growing numbers of women who share each other's milk.

'I'm on a journey to find people who believe milk has to be from the breast,' says Kate, 'people who buy it, sell it, people who give it away and people who even feed each other's babies. To many this might seem weird, but they challenge us that it's actually much weirder to give our babies cows' milk than it is to drink milk from another woman. It's a journey I won't forget in a hurry.'

The people Kate meets include sisters who cross-feed their babies; women who are able to breast-feed even though they have never been pregnant; surrogate mothers who produce two gallons of milk a week for donation; and a cancer sufferer who believes breast milk has cured his condition.

  1. It was a pleasure to see such a natural and essential part of life being discussed so honestly. I'm male, my sons mother wasn't able to produce milk either in the weeks prior to giving birth, nor at any time afterwards, yet neither a wet nurse or even breast milk from a donor was ever mentioned when in the hospital as this was raised as a concern, we were simply told "if you can't produce any milk you'll have to use formula". Sexual activity between a couple often involves breast stimulation, for both partners, as it's not only women who get aroused having their nipples teased. During child rearing, breasts that produce milk are there to fill a purpose in life, just as they do with every other mammal on the planet, it's only humans that have the sexual connection with the mammory glands. Upon seeing the male gay couple in the article, I recalled some years back I heard of some cases where men had been known to produce a small amount of liquid from their nipples in certain cases, although not in any quantity or of the quality a baby would need, I suspect if the guy had a higher then normal female hormone count this could account for these cases. I was a bit disapointed that not one person in the show mentioned that human breasts were around a hell of a long time before formula was ever invented, approximately 4-million years before formula, and the earliest replacement for non human breast milk would have been a domesticated animals, for instance a cow, goat, sheep or the milk from some other mammal, and we all drink their milk or cream from a bottle or carton, or eat it in the form of cheeses. I personally happen to believe that breast is best, both for babies and for men, no doubt there, but never having tasted it, I can't say that the final part of the show gave it any merits, other then a few laughs and a tiny hint into the bedroom activities of the presenter and her husband. But if I was to try breast milk personally, as a guy, I'd want my mouth to be attached to the nipple that was producing it fresh & warm. But all in all, it was so nice to see women being open about something that is not only so natural, but another part of the birthing and child rearing process that men can't do, except with a bottle, since we can't give birth either! Child rearing and bonding is a unique adventure for the mother, I was very involved with our child, changing the first nappy, giving him his first bath, but I don't believe we guys can ever hope or expect to appreciate how powerful the bond, emotions or chemical interchanges are, when you consider the mother has been carrying that child inside her for (in most cases) 39-40 weeks, a woman is after all, perfectly designed for growing a baby which feeds of her in the womb, having the baby, then continuing (in most cases) to feed the baby outside of the womb, again, from her own body, if she can't then a mothers instinct is to find some method of keeping that baby alive. I hope when/if the presenter has another child, she allows us to revisit her at that time, and allows the cameras to record her emotions and opinions, maybe even allowing a tested clean wet nurse to hold and feed her baby, and maybe allow herself to feed a willing baby (or toddler), as in the clip there was a willing toddler prepared to go to her, and whilst she was shocked, she didn't push the child away or make the child feel it had done something wrong, her "mummy" instinct and the kiss and thank you she gave the child for coming to her was just so natural I reckon. Well done, see, you are a good mummy!
