Series 1 Summary
US smash hit comedy featuring Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day, an adorable and charming girl in her late 20s. After splitting up with her boyfriend, she moves in with three single guys she has never met before.
She's not used to hanging with the boys, especially at home, but as their relationships progress, Jess and the guys realise they need each other more than they thought they would, and form a charmingly dysfunctional family.
Episode 1 - Pilot
Jess arrives at her new flat with an unusual line in house-warming gifts, including a Dirty Dancing DVD (which is on a constant loop) and a neat line in personal theme tunes.
After days of watching Jess curled up in the fetal position watching Dirty Dancing, her new flatmates decide to stage an intervention - and get her back in the dating game.
Episode 2 - Kryptonite
Coach moves out, and Winston, who's been on a two-year stint as a basketball coach in Latvia, returns to his old flat.
Winston, Schmidt and Nick refuse to lend Jess any household items so she has to go round to her ex-boyfriend Spencer's house to collect her belongings.
Episode 3 - Wedding
The guys are invited to a wedding of a mutual friend. Worried that he'll run into his ex-girlfriend, Nick asks Jess to be his date. Schmidt is on the prowl for single women.
Episode 4 - Naked
Nick sets up a date with his sarcastic colleague Amanda but loses his confidence when Jess nervously giggles when she accidentially walks in on him while he's getting ready.
Meanwhile, Winston becomes obsessed with learning pop-culture references on Wikipedia.
Episode 5 - Cece Crashes
Cece convinces Jess that Nick likes her as more than just a room-mate. Schmidt tries to seal the deal with Cece.
Episode 6 - Thanksgiving
Jess invites Paul, a music teacher from her school that she's always had a crush on, to the gang's big Thanksgiving dinner, which naturally goes horribly awry.
Episode 7 - Bells
Desperate for rehearsal space, Jess brings her youth hand-bell quartet to the flat to practise and things take an interesting turn when Winston reveals hidden musical talents.
Episode 8 - Bad in Bed
Convinced her ex-boyfriend cheated on her because she was sexually unadventurous, Jess grows worried that she'll disappoint Paul in bed and takes steps to ensure things go well.
Episode 9 - The 23rd
Jess frets when Paul surprises her with a thoughtful and lavish Christmas gift, as she's only bought him a soft toy. The whole group are invited to Schmidt's office party, where Schmidt is forced to dress up as a sexy Santa.
Episode 10 - The Story of the 50
Schmidt's plans for his 29th birthday fall apart when he loses the reservation for his party bus, so Jess enlists the help of her socially awkward vice principal Tanya, who provides a yellow school bus for the gang to use.
Episode 11 - Jess and Julia
Jess enlists Julia to help her get out of paying for a traffic ticket, but feels annoyed when Julia isn't very friendly towards her. Winston tries to hook up with an ex-date. Schmidt is baffled as to why his bath towel is always damp.
Episode 12 - The Landlord
Jess and Nick run into Remy, their surly landlord, in the lift. While Nick takes the chance to complain about the long list of broken items in their flat, Jess decides to befriend him.
However, she inadvertently reveals to Remy that there are too many people living in the loft apartment and the flatmates scramble to hide the fact that they have broken so many of the tenancy rules.
Meanwhile, Schmidt becomes convinced that his boss has been subtly trying to seduce him, so he asks Cece for advice and is surprised by what she says.
Episode 13 - Valentine's Day
Single on Valentine's Day for the first time in six years, Jess talks Schmidt into going out on the hunt for one-night stands with her.
Cece points out that Jess is not capable of having sex without getting emotionally attached, but Jess won't be dissuaded and deliberately chooses a guy she has nothing in common with for her casual encounter.
Julia's devotion to her career gets in the way when Nick tries to organise a romantic Valentine's Day dinner, and Winston gets the wrong idea when Shelby invites him over to her place.
Episode 14 - Bully
When one of Jess's students is constantly taunted by his classmates, she takes pity on him and confronts the bullies.
However, her unorthodox approach soon places her in the line of fire and she is pushed to breaking point by the offenders.
Schmidt begins to feel demoralised by Cece's secretive behaviour. Julia sends Nick a potted cactus just before leaving on a business trip, and he becomes convinced that this means she intends to break up with him.
Episode 15 - Injured
Nick hurts his back playing touch football and Jess discovers that he doesn't have medical insurance. To help him out, she takes him to see her doctor friend Sadie, even though Sadie is an obstetrician.
During the examination, Sadie discovers that Nick may have a more serious underlying health problem.
Jess rallies the gang to help keep Nick's spirits up, but he can't avoid considering his own mortality while he waits for his medical test results.
Episode 16 - Control
Schmidt becomes agitated when Jess starts to furnish the neat and tidy loft apartment with household items she finds dumped in the street.
Her efforts to make him relax and stop doing all the housework result in a more chilled-out Schmidt, but the delicate ecosystem of the loft is thrown off balance and the place is soon a mess.
Meanwhile, Winston is determined to make Nick hand over the large sum of money he lost to him in a poker game.
Episode 17 - Fancyman Part One
Jess has an awkward parent-teacher meeting with Russell Schiller (guest star Dermot Mulroney), the wealthy father of a student who has been creating some strange artwork in her class.
Although they don't hit it off at first, Jess reluctantly finds herself falling for Russell's easy charm and good looks, and agrees to go on a date with him.
Meanwhile, Nick can't buy a new mobile phone because of his low credit rating, and Schmidt and Winston get way too competitive over a bar trivia contest.
Episode 18 - Fancyman Part Two
Jess worries when her sophisticated first date with Russell Schiller (guest star Dermot Mulroney) ends on an awkward note.
Meanwhile, Nick's old college friend Dirk comes to stay at the loft apartment and brings out Nick's laddish side.
Winston badly misjudges the situation when Shelby goes on holiday with her girlfriends; and Schmidt and Cece fail to keep their relationship entirely under the covers.
Episode 19 - Secrets
While training for a charity run, Jess realises that Cece has been keeping a secret from her, which puts their friendship to the test.
Meanwhile, Winston hates being the only person who knows about Cece and Schmidt's relationship. He finally cracks and tells Nick, who immediately lets the cat out of the bag.
And, after a run of luck with the ladies, Nick is dating several women at once, but realises he needs Schmidt's help to hone his womanising skills.
Episode 20 - Normal
Jess returns to the flat after spending an idyllic week with Russell (guest star Dermot Mulroney) at his house.
However, her happiness with the new relationship is short-lived when Cece points out that she is doing everything on Russell's terms.
So Jess nervously decides to balance things out by inviting Russell to spend a weekend with the gang at the loft.
Meanwhile, Winston begins work at a sports radio station, but quickly discovers that his new boss is even more demanding than he'd been led to believe.
Episode 21 - Kids
Jess agrees to look after Russell's daughter Sarah while he is out of town and does her best to demonstrate good mothering skills.
However, Russell's ex-wife Ouli (guest star Jeanne Tripplehorn) is unhappy with the arrangement and makes life difficult for Jess.
Winston's boss Joe torments him on the way to an important talk-show appearance, Cece is terrified that she might be pregnant, and Nick has to defend his new relationship.
Episode 22 - Tomatoes
When Jess witnesses a fierce argument between Russell and his ex-wife Ouli (guest stars Dermot Mulroney and Jeanne Tripplehorn), the obvious sexual tension between them makes her worry that she and Russell don't share the same fiery passion.

And, in an attempt to deal with his two recent break-ups, Nick cultivates a rooftop vegetable garden.
Episode 23 - Backslide
Upset about splitting up with Russell, Jess goes out for a few drinks and hooks up with her ex-boyfriend Paul (guest star Justin Long), but they have different views about their night together.
Nick is also in danger of falling back into a relationship with his ex-girlfriend Caroline, who is not popular with the gang.
Cece takes Schmidt along when she visits her Nana (guest star Madhur Jaffrey) in a nursing home, while Winston gets a painful souvenir of his wild night out with his boss Joe.
Episode 24 - See Ya
Schmidt and Winston help Nick pack his possessions as he prepares to move into a new flat with Caroline.
However, Nick suffers a panic attack while taking the removals van to his new home and just carries on driving, not stopping until he reaches the desert, forcing Jess and Cece to come to the rescue.
During their adventure, Winston tackles his fear of the dark, Schmidt and Cece's relationship reaches a crossroads, and Jess and Nick face a coyote.
