My Wall Street

My Wall Street

Watch this episode now on 4oD Kerry, Paul and Lucy

There are 23 Wall Streets in the UK. Cutting Edge steps beyond the news headlines and into the front rooms of our Wall Street residents, revealing an eccentric, funny and ultimately uplifting portrait of a changing Britain.

The film follows the fortunes of characters such as unemployed Wolverhampton Wall Streeter Ali Khan, who's desperately looking for a job to support his wife and two children.

Grimsby's Paul Hirst may have lost his pub, but he's still clinging on to his extensive Star Wars memorabilia collection - his spendthrift values haven't changed, even though the world around him has.

Frank Clark's 'recession, what recession?' mantra sees him defying plunging national car sales. Ebbw Vale Wall Streeters karaoke-loving newlyweds Lisa and Clayton remain resolutely upbeat under the cloud of possible future redundancy.

My Wall Street is an intimate and affectionate portrait of the remarkable adaptability of these very British families, each finding its own way to survive in troubled economic times.

  1. where is the button to watch this on 4od? would be good to have some way of filtering out all the listings that are not available on 4od, as the new 4od is a bit user unfriendly like that.

  2. Regarding your programme about trailer trash. I noted that Ali had 2 cars, one a Merc. Richard, (the Jesus freak) didn't travel by public transport but had a car. The Welsh couple lived in a house in Cwm (Ebbw Vale) that cost about ?8,000 (I know the area intimately). One of the people (I can't remember which) had recently been to the USA and the girl in the corner shop had flown to Karachi! These feckless people need a shot up the arse!

  3. You just need to watch this programme and weep. The human cost of the credit crunch is portrayed through the lives, hopes and anxieties of these very ordinary, but thoroughly decent men and women. They are the unwitting victims of all the venture capitalists, hedge fund managers and speculative spivs who slashed and burned their way through the financial markets for nigh on two decades. Politicians and regulators who seem to have lost their moral compass during this time would do well to reconnect with the values and aspirations of the decent, honest and straightforward citizens of Wall Street. They are the epitomy of UK modern day, 21st century Everyman and Woman and watching their often heroic struggles to cope with circumstances overwhelmingly not of their making was very moving. I commend the Cutting Edge production team for this warm and authentic slice of life which portrayed, not the grotesque or sensational aspects of British working class life but people who shine with vitality, affection and sheer groundedness. When was the last time you were struck by these qualities in a merchant banker ..... or a politician ?
