It seems Billie and Earl's problems are finally resolved but with the happy couple back in the motel, Earl quickly understands the meaning of the phrase 'three's a crowd'. Not only does Randy have to sleep on the balcony now, but Earl spent the last of his money throwing a prison prom for an arsonist, meaning he's entirely dependent on his new wife.
The fact there's a difference between the reality of his marriage with Billie and his coma-induced fantasy troubles Earl enough to seek some advice from Darnell, the smartest person he knows, and the happiest couple he knows, Kenny and Stuart. When their advice fails he turns to his mum, which is when he realises the answer to his problems was staring him in the face.
His dad was never there for the awful things his mum subjected them too, Carl always avoided them by working late. If his dad could make his marriage work by throwing himself into work, Earl decides to do the same with the list in the hope Karma will take care of the rest.
After first getting everybody to help turn Joy's trailer back over, and then returning Dee-Dee's leg to her, miraculously his relationship with Billie improves which gets Earl thinking. He's had bad marriages because he's deserved bad marriages - if he keeps being nice to women maybe things will get better for him and Billie?
