With a GED and a real job, Earl moves onto the final part of his three-step quest to become an adult by moving out of the motel - only he's got a feeling his life is still missing something.

Joy is in jail, courtesy of Dog the bounty hunter. Her trial is looming and she needs Earl to recruit as many character witnesses as he can. When he checks to see how Darnell is coping, Earl realises the thing he's missing - a woman to love, and to share a necklace of tiny golden hearts with.

The search for love and character witnesses doesn't go well, until Earl meets Ruby, Joy's deaf lawyer. Not only does she think Earl would be a good character witness, she's also got the hots.

One date at the local pizzeria and a night of bedroom gymnastics later and love is on the cards, until Ruby reads the list and discovers he was the man who robbed her a few years ago.

Back in court, with fifteen sets of her prints on the truck, security pictures of her running towards the truck and a damning witness testimony, things are also looking bleak for Joy.

Whilst Ruby discredits every shred of evidence against her, the Prosecution have one more trick up their sleeve and play back the years of emergency calls Earl made to the Police Department every time Joy tried to kill somebody.

Realising if she goes down her family will fall apart, Earl takes the blame and claims he stole the truck, and in doing so wins back Ruby's heart. He's got no major misdemeanours on his record, so is looking forward to being out before Christmas, until the judge gives him a two year sentence in the State Pen for not owning up earlier.

Just when he finally gets it all and becomes an adult with a job, apartment and a girlfriend, it all gets taken away - even the list - leaving Earl in a cell with Ralph, who has just picked an argument with a skinhead who owns a blow gun.
