Series 1 Summary
Set in the mid-90s at the height of Cool Britannia, this six-part drama is based on Rae Earl's real-life diaries. It takes a hilarious and honest look at teenage life through the eyes of Rae, a funny, music-mad 16 year old who, despite an eccentric mother, body image and mental health issues, has a huge lust for life, love and trying to get laid.
In the opening episode, Rae is discharged from psychiatric hospital after months of treatment.
Back in the real world, all she wants is to be a normal teenager, but when you're secretly mad and your mother is hiding her new Tunisian boyfriend from immigration, it's not that simple.
Rae discovers her best friend Chloe is hanging out with a new gang, but will she be able to fit in with them?
Rae is determined to catch up with the rest of the gang in terms of her sexual experience, but worries her weight will stop her from getting a boyfriend. When one of the boys in the gang asks her out on a date, she embarks on a journey of sexual discovery.
Rae and Chloe's friendship becomes difficult when Rae discovers who Chloe has been secretly dating. When things start to get rocky, Rae finds herself drawn back to her old patterns of destructive behaviour, but an upsetting event makes her view someone in the gang in a different light.
Rae is falling in love but doesn't know whether to admit it to the object of her desires. As Kester pushes her to examine what triggered her self-harming, Rae is torn between telling people the truth or keeping her illness a secret. Then her two worlds collide at an impromptu house party.
Rae and Chloe battle it out in the fight for Finn's affections, but when Rae's mum prevents her from going to a rave with the rest of the gang, Rae thinks it's game over.
After arguing with both her mum and Kester, she decides it's time to set herself free from all the constraints of her mental health issues and stops taking her medication, but the consequences are huge.
In the final episode, Rae is in a very dark place following Tix's deterioration and an argument with Chloe. To make matters worse, she loses her diary and begins to see her world crashing down around her.
A surprising guardian angel rescues her from the brink and forces her to contemplate her issues. But will she survive when her deepest secrets look like they could be revealed?
