Jen and Bek are amongst a small but growing number of smallholders who are keen to apply the principles of local seasonal food production to farming flowers. Of course if you have a garden, you too can grow your own seasonal cut flowers.
- Delphiniums are an old cottage garden favourite whose great wands of flower in early summer make a superb display, both in a border and in an arrangement indoors
- Cosmos are annuals, so they grow from seed to flower in just one season. They start to flower in mid-summer and will continue right through to the first frost. And the more you pick for your house, the more flowers they'll produce.
- Dahlias are one of my own favourites - no other plant fills late summer and autumn with such a rich range of colours
- Some plants, especially many wild flowers, actually flower better in poor soil and won't thrive in enriched ground
