Mike Newell's star-studded drama examines the roles of women in the early 1950s.
Julia Roberts plays Katherine Watson, a young free-spirited teacher from California, who moves east to take up a prestigious job teaching art history at Wellesley College.
When she arrives, she is shocked to find that nearly all of her intelligent, talented and privileged students have no particular ambitions after college beyond finding Mr Right and settling into a life of domesticity.
She challenges her pupils to consider striving for more, but will any of the students (including Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ginnifer Goodwin) decide to follow a path less taken, and live up to the potential Katherine sees in them?
Also starring Dominic West, Juliet Stevenson and Marcia Gay Harden.
