A fresh look at Velazquez's great masterpiece Las Menias, his early life in Seville and his gradual assent from provincial star to first painter to the court in Madrid. He sank into relative obscurity after he died, and it wasn't until the 19th century that artists started talking about him again. What the French Impressionists admired is what still strikes us today about Velazquez: the atmosphere and mood of his paintings, their incredible rich complexity, and the utterly believable reality of the scenes.
