Madeleine detectives reveal new leads

Artists impression of suspicious man seen by witnesses near the McCann's appartment

Thursday 07 May 2009

The two former British police detectives investigating Madeleine McCann's disappearance speak for the first time in this Cutting Edge film.

It follows the detectives as they attempt to piece together what  happened two years ago in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz from eyewitness reports.

Dave Edgar, a retired Detective Inspector who leads the search team, says: 'There's someone local, lives locally, has the answer to this, and not much wider than 10 or 15 kilometres away from Praia de Luz.'

The other full-time member of the search team, Arthur Cowley, who spent three decades as a Detective Sergeant, agrees: 'The answer still lies in Praia de Luz, and it's important that we focus on Praia de Luz and the surrounding area.'

When the Portuguese police shelved the case last summer, they released 30,000 case files. One key statement appears to corroborate the sighting by the McCann's friend Jane Tanner who told police about a man she saw carrying a small girl near the apartment on 3 May at around 9.10pm.

Shortly afterwards on the same night, another family had also seen a man carrying a small blonde child nearby. Their descriptions of the man and of the child were very similar to Jane Tanner's.

And the search team have found a number of statements from tourists, all noticing a suspicious-looking man hanging around near the McCann's apartment.

Statements from the files seem to suggest that the McCanns may have been watched in the days before Madeleine was abducted.

Now the investigators hope that the documentary and reconstruction may jog the memories of others who may know, or have seen, something significant.

  1. If the weather was cool on the night someone 'saw ' Madeleine being carried, why was she still asleep? My children would have been making a lot of noise if they were cold. Was she drugged? Perhaps someone working at the hotel had access to room keys.... a lot of money can be paid for a child.

  2. I watched the programme. If I was a detective I would be looking for a local middle age man that did not own a car (at that time). Most middle aged men own cars. Why walk miles carrying a child? Is there not the equivalent of DVLC Swansea in Portugal?

  3. After so much hype - CH4's Cutting Edge documentary "Madeline Was here" was to me nothing more than a damp squib. Even after many of the investigation documents were examined - the programme told us little that we did not know already. There is at least one book out that goes into the investigation at a much greater depth than this programme. CH4 has a great reputation for documentaries - but this programme dented this reputation.
