Out-of-work writer Eddie (Cooper) has hit rock bottom; he's struggling with creative block and has been dumped by his girlfriend Lindy (Cornish). But, when his former brother-in-law Vernon introduces him to a new designer pharmaceutical called NZT, that all begins to change.
Suddenly able to recall everything he's ever seen, heard and read, and imbued with supernatural capacity to focus and think, he knocks off 90 pages of his new book in a night.
However, when he returns to Vernon for more of the drug, he finds him dead - and his stash freely available. Seizing the chance for the success he craves, Eddie embarks on an NZT-fuelled power trip, making thousands on the stock market and becoming an advisor to top business mogul Carl Van Loon (De Niro).
But he soon attracts the attention of others: before long, he's being chased by sinister stalkers, a violent gangster and even the NYPD, and all while contending with the drug's unwanted side effects. On top of all this, he must deal with the most pressing issue of all: what will he do when his supply runs out?
