Andrew was badly bullied at school but he believes that, far from damaging him, the bullies only made him stronger. What he thinks did crush him was a general assumption that because he looked different, he wasn't very bright.
With his horizons squashed, Andrew hasn't had the confidence to attempt to achieve what he'd really like to in life. He works in his local supermarket, in the same town in which he's always lived. All the time, he's harboured a desire to draw for a living and wants to study to be an illustrator.
When Katie meets him, she is shocked how others have needlessly placed limits on Andrew's life. However, there are signs that Andrew is already preparing to move his life on.
