Channel 4 catches up with Katie Piper to ask how she's getting on since making the documentary.
Channel 4: How have you been since making the Cutting Edge documentary for Channel 4 and have you undergone any further medical treatment?
Katie: Yes, since the documentary I've had some more burns reconstructive surgery to my upper eyelids and my neck. Skin was taken from my groin and used to build me some new eyelids! I have also had some more operations on my throat to try and help with swallowing.
Channel 4: Tell us about the feedback you've received since making the documentary - including out on the street when you've been out and about.
Katie: The feedback has been a real confidence boost. I have received hundreds of supportive and encouraging letters as well as emails and such heart warming messages online. Many people on the street have approached me which at first I found hard as I was frightened but with so much public support I am starting to feel so much bolder, secure and safe. I have changed so much since the documentary and I believe it is down to the public support I've had.
Channel 4: Would you say you feel more confident since making the documentary?
Katie: Massively, I am a different person. So much more confident.
Channel 4: How has your family been since the attack; are they immensely protective of you?
Katie: Yes, they are very protective. It has been a very hard and stressful time for all of them.
Channel 4: What are your plans for 2010?
Katie: I am really looking forward to 2010. It is a fresh start for me and a real chance to put everything behind me and focus on my charity, The Katie Piper Foundation, which is going to help other burns survivors and people who suffer from facial disfigurements. So many people have written to me asking for my help and I hope I can make a difference not just in their lives but also in society and the way the media portrays somebody who looks different.
