Written and directed by Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin, The Doom Generation, Nowhere), this sci-fi comedy-drama follows Smith (Thomas Dekker) and his best friend Stella (Haley Bennett) through their (literally) brightly coloured sexual adventures at a Southern California university.
Stella's lover Lorelei's (Roxanne Mesquida) supernatural powers eventually turn scary, and Smith begins to see characters from his dreams at parties.
As well as spending time with adventuress London (Juno Temple), his frequent bedfellow, Smith lusts after his hunky, clothing-optional roommate Thor.
The drama intensifies as animal-masked people begin to pursue several of the characters, and Smith learns that a nuclear explosion is imminent.
Jumping between sex comedy, murder mystery and apocalyptic sci-fi drama, Kaboom won Cannes' first-ever Queer Palm for its contribution to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender issues.
