A new period of separation from Abigail looms when Adams is sent to France along with Benjamin Franklin. Their mission is to secure French financial and military support for the revolutionary war effort - but along the way they skirmish with a British warship.
After making it to Paris, Adams is vexed when his demanding approach to negotiation conflicts with Franklin's preference for softer diplomacy.
Adams sends his son, John Quincy, to Russia to work for the American Minister there. Meanwhile, Adams is taken ill with a severe fever, and is left helpless and unable to advance the revolution he set in motion.
