After witnessing a bloody battle, Adams heads back to Philadelphia, where he enters the debate about how to create an independent country. With violence raging in Boston, he nominates George Washington to lead the Continental Army.
A proclamation arrives from King George III, warning that treason will be met with death. A tentative Congress votes on whether or not they should risk declaring independence from Britain. While Adams attempts to rally them, his wife Abigail tends to an outbreak of smallpox in Massachesetts.
The vote goes Adams' way, and the Declaration of Independence is read to a racuous crowd in Philadelphia. 'The break is made,' Adams writes to Abigail, 'and now our work begins.'
