Jo Frost: Extreme Parental Guidance episode 7

Wednesday 17 August 2011

In episode 7 Jo caught up with pageant princess Madison to see if she managed to change her diva-ish ways

Nine-year-old Madison - pageant princess on stage and mini-diva at home - had an attitude that upset the whole family. Mum Moya found she was doing everything for Madison, from cleaning up after her to brushing her teeth. Not only did she have no responsibilities, but Madison's excessive designer lifestyle was draining for Moya, both emotionally and financially, and she feared she would have to sell their home if things didn't change.

Jo helped Moya to face up to her responsibilities and to set an example for Madison. By establishing boundaries and enforcing them, Madison soon learnt to start taking responsibility for her chores and that her mum wasn't a push over. By Moya facing up to the trouble caused by Madison's expensive tastes, her daughter quickly realised that money doesn't just grow on trees.

Although things were really tricky to begin with, a year on Madison's sister Leah and her mum are amazed that she is the same person. As Moya says, 'Madison has changed dramatically. She's helping a lot more around the house and she's offering to do things without being asked.' Madison agrees; 'I appreciate my mum a lot more and I realise I can't just leave everything to her.' But Moya knows that Madison's change in attitude is as much about herself: 'I think what's caused the change is me waking up more than Madison. I knew what I had to do, but it was Jo that really said, 'Look, open your eyes, this has got to stop.'
