Job: Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London, Lord professor Robert Winston runs a research programme with a long-term aim of improving human transplantation.
Robert’s research led to the development of gynaecological microsurgery in the 1970s and improvements in IVF treatment. His work has enabled families carrying gene defects to have children free of fatal illnesses. He has been involved with a number of UK charities, including Cancer Research UK, the Stem Cell Foundation, and the Association of Medical Research Charities. He has written and hosted several award-winning science shows for the BBC and Discovery channels.
Robert’s activities in the House of Lords include speaking regularly on education, science, medicine and the arts. He was voted Peer of the Year in June 2008. He has initiated enquiries into Antibiotic Resistance, Non-Food Crops, Nuclear Waste and Science in Schools.
Hobbies & interests: His interests include theatre, classical music, and the wines of Bordeaux.
