Background, hobbies & interests: Born in Merseyside to actor parents, Cherie was the first member of her family to go to university. She studied law and got the highest mark in the country in her Bar Finals. She is married to Tony Blair, with whom she has four children. She is a socialist. Cherie is Patron of the Asian University for Women, based in Bangladesh, for which she raises money across the world and has set up the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women which helps with business initiatives for women in countries that lack equality for women. During her fourth pregnancy, her work continued until just before the birth of baby Leo - and she was aged 45 at the time.

What people say: Cherie wrote an article on the benefits of free education in the barristers' magazine, Counsel back in 2005. Edward Davey, then the Liberal Democrat education spokesman, said of her comments: 'I warmly applaud Cherie Blair's recognition that a free university education was vital for her and, by implication, vital for tens of thousands like her.'
