Ten-year-old John wakes up one morning to find a big invisible something sitting on his bed. He quickly becomes friends with the giant, who he calls Ivor.
John discovers that Ivor can be any shape at all and is very mischievous, but also proves to be helpful too: he vacuums the carpets and even does the washing up. Ivor causes mayhem at John's house, and John's mum and dad think it's haunted. John finds Ivor fun to be with, but when he takes him to school, the trouble really starts.
