Follow in Gok's footsteps with some canny customisations and tasty tweaks...
One of the biggest tips given to our three gorgeous girls this series is one that applies to everyone who wants to look sensational - if the clothes on the rack don’t fit you as they are, it doesn’t mean that they can’t be yours.
The key to looking fabulous, whatever your figure, is in not being afraid to customise your outfits. Add a zip here, or a sequin there, and not only will you have a wonderful wardrobe that will fit you like a dream, you will also have clothes that are unique.
The first thing to do is to locate the area that you think could be improved. This could be anything, from a tight waistline to boring shoes or sleeves that are too long. Then it’s time to get creative! Try to think of solutions that would not only work a treat, but that will also make your outfit look extra fabulous.
Like many other women, Tracy was avoiding skinny jeans because they were a bit tricky to get on and off. But this meant that she was also missing out on an opportunity to make the most of her lovely legs. The solution? A simple zip was inserted into the outer seam at the bottom of each leg, to make it easier to get them on and off. Once the jeans were on, the bottoms were zipped up, leaving her pins looking great, and trouble free.
A zip also worked for Clare when she got her hands on a pair of trousers that could look lovely with her prosthetic leg both on and off. Popping a zip across the knee meant that Clare had the flexibility to take her leg on and off whenever she needed to, without leaving an empty trouser leg, or having to worry about creating a turn-up.
Remember: Customising your clothes doesn’t have to be a big deal. There are shops and companies all over the country who specialise in adjusting clothes to suit you. Most dry cleaners will offer this service, as do many department stores, so you won't have to go far to find someone who will be able to help. Alternatively, when it comes to the smaller changes, you could have a go yourself! For those of you with a bit of experience, sewing machines are a brilliant way to make something unique and special. Otherwise, start simple and get your hands on a stylish sewing kit.
Three Simple Ideas to Get You Started
- If buttons and clasps are a proving to be a pain, try using Velcro or a popper instead. And to keep the look you love so much, sew the original buttons on to the top of the jacket, and no one will ever know the difference.
- If your sleeves or trousers are too long and a bit impractical, just roll them up for a casual look. Showing off your ankles or your wrists can be quite sexy! You can even get specially designed 'armbands' to help fasten your sleeve at the correct length. These expand when you put them on and then sit comfortably over the sleeve at the top of your arm.
- If you’ve got an aid or accessory which doesn’t work well with the look you’ve got going on, then don’t be afraid to jazz it up with some diamante, glitter or beads. If you’ve got it, flaunt it!
