Series 9 Summary
As the ninth and final season of the US comedy begins, Robin and Barney's wedding is imminent and the five friends are all travelling to the nuptials on Long Island.
Episode 1 - The Locket
The gang all travel to Long Island for Robin and Barney's wedding, but the happy couple make a startling discovery about their families en route.
On his way back from Minnesota, Marshall is horrified to see that his mother has posted a picture online giving away the fact that he has accepted his dream job without consulting Lily first.
Lily has an important encounter on the train, and realises that Ted hasn't dealt with his feelings for Robin.
Episode 2 - Coming Back
Marshall struggles to find a way to get back to New York in time for the wedding and is forced to take to the road in a gas-guzzling car.
When James reveals he has cheated on his husband Tom and is getting a divorce, Robin worries about how Barney will react to the news.
Meanwhile, Ted frets about being the only single man at the wedding and staying alone at a romantic hotel.
Episode 3 - Last Time in New York
Lily catches a glimpse of the list of things Ted wants to do in New York before he moves to Chicago and frets that she is the only person who knows about his plans.
Robin and Barney realise they have very little time together before their elderly relatives arrive for the wedding.
When Lily discovers that Ted and Marshall accidentally destroyed her best dress, she gets her own back.
Episode 4 - The Broken Code
During a poker game night, Barney works through his anger at Ted after finding out that Ted still has feelings for Robin.
Although he still hasn't made it back to the gang, Marshall helps to settle their dispute by taking on the role of judge via Skype.
Lily realises she is Robin's only girlfriend, and that while she is in Rome for a year Robin could be lonely, so she tries to find her a new female pal.
Episode 5 - The Poker Game
During a pre-wedding game of poker, Robin wins James's ring but refuses to give it back, angering Barney's mother Loretta.
Barney hates having to choose sides between his fiancée and his family, but Lily coaches him on how to navigate the emotional minefield.
Ted and Marshall get into a dispute about wedding gifts and thank-you notes that may or may not have been sent in the past.
Episode 6 - Knight Vision
Ted finds himself with three prospects to be his date for the wedding weekend, but chooses poorly about which one to spend time with.
Feeling judged on their messy past by the stern minister who is going to marry them, Barney and Robin steal Marshall and Lily's sweet story about how they first met.
During their long journey, Marshall finds out more about his driving companion, Daphne.
Episode 7 - No Questions Asked
An impatient Daphne sends a text message to Lily, revealing the truth about Marshall becoming a judge.
Alarmed, Marshall begs Ted to sneak into Lily's room while she's asleep and delete the text, invoking the gang's 'no questions asked' rule so that he won't know why.
But when Barney and Robin try to help Ted, they realise that they keep acting on their own initiative without consulting each other.
Episode 8 - The Lighthouse
When Robin and Loretta's conflict sharply escalates, Barney finds himself caught in the middle.
Marshall and Daphne deal with a stowaway on their road trip, while Ted and Cassie try to enjoy a trip to a lighthouse.
Episode 9 - Platonish
Robin is upset to discover at the last moment that her mother can't come to the wedding after all.
The gang recall the evening six months earlier when Barney accepted a series of romantic challenges from Lily and Robin, and ponder the nature of the ever-changing love triangle between Ted, Robin and Barney.
Episode 10 - Mom and Dad
Seeing his mother and father together for the first time in years, Barney becomes convinced that he can get them back together.
But Barney doesn't realise that his brother James has another partner in mind for their mum.
Ted turns detective when a gift that Barney planned to give to Robin is ruined and he suspects he has been framed for the deed.
Episode 11 - Bedtime Stories
Marshall and baby Marvin's long journey to Farhampton for the wedding continues by bus.
In order to get Marvin off to sleep while they are stuck in traffic, Marshall is forced to create three rhyming bedtime stories that are based on the gang's many exploits.
Episode 12 - The Rehearsal Dinner
Barney becomes convinced that Robin is planning to throw him a special wedding rehearsal dinner at the laser tag arena, which infuriates both her and the gang.
Ted attempts to learn to play the piano so that he can fulfil his promise to perform at the wedding ceremony dressed as Liberace, but the task is beyond him. Lily struggles with the fact that she can't keep a secret.
Episode 13 - Bass Player Wanted
The friends encounter a guest at the hotel who intentionally stirs up trouble between Lily and Robin, and then between Ted and Barney.
An exhausted Marshall and baby Marvin finally arrive at the Farhampton Inn to join the wedding party.
Episode 14 - Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra
Just before he attempts to deliver a devastating slap to Barney, Marshall tells the gang the story of how he went on a quest to learn the three mighty virtues of speed, strength and accuracy in order to master the Slap of a Million Exploding Suns.
Episode 15 - Unpause
Marshall and Lily's big fight about Marshall accepting a judgeship without telling Lily has been looming.
The couple decide to put it on hold in order to enjoy their reunion. Can Marshall make sure that the argument is never unpaused?
Robin and Ted finally find out what Barney does for a living by cross-examining him when he has had too much to drink.
Episode 16 - How Your Mother Met Me
In a series of flashbacks, it is finally revealed how Ted first encounters his future wife, including a history of missed connections when he meets her roommate Cindy.
Without realising it, the future couple have shared many friends and acquaintances over the years.
Episode 17 - Sunrise
On the eve of the wedding, a tipsy Barney wanders out of the hotel, bumps into two hapless young men and takes them under his wing.
Ted and Robin take a walk on the beach and have a heart-to-heart conversation. Marshall finds out that his hotel room is haunted by ghosts old and new.
Episode 18 - Rally
Barney can't get out of bed on the morning of his wedding because he is suffering from the world's worst hangover.
So the gang try to identify and locate the far-fetched ingredients needed to concoct the famous Stinson's Hangover Fixer Elixir so that the groom can attend the pre-wedding photo shoot in two hours' time.
Episode 19 - Vesuvius
It's the morning of the wedding and Ted attempts to help a stressed-out Barney decide which suit to wear.
Lily thinks that Robin isn't treating the most important day of her life with the significance it deserves, which leads to an argument, and the gang watch an embarrassing movie that Ted has forbidden them to see.
Episode 20 - Daisy
Marshall asks Ted and Barney to help him work out where Lily went when she stormed out of the hotel on the night of their big fight, but he is shocked when he finds out the truth.
Robin is worried when Barney exhibits some of the same behaviour that her father did on the day of his wedding to her mother.
Episode 21 - Gary Blauman
When an old friend of the gang, Gary Blauman, shows up at the hotel for Robin and Barney's wedding unexpectedly, the seating plan is thrown into total disarray.
The debate about which table to seat him at reveals that everyone in the group holds very strong opinions about Gary and whether or not he should be allowed to stay for the ceremony.
Episode 22 - The End of the Aisle
With only 30 minutes before the wedding, both Robin and Barney are having panic attacks...
Robin is still convinced it's a bad sign that she never found the locket, and Ted attempts to calm her down while wrestling with whether or not he should come clean about the locket's whereabouts.
Meanwhile, Lily and Marshall help Barney with his vows, and in the process realise that they may not have upheld every one of their own.
Episode 23 - Last Forever Part 1
With Barney and Robin's wedding day behind them, Ted says his goodbyes to the gang and prepares to leave for his new life in Chicago.
But fate clearly has something else in store for him when he has a chance encounter at Farhampton railway station.
Episode 24 - Last Forever Part 2
Changes of circumstance cause the gang to see less of each other over the years, but they manage to reunite one more time for Ted's wedding.
A huge event in his personal life finally leads Barney to change his ways.
